Sexy Soccer (DVD) newly tagged "comedy"

That's the best thing you'll be able to do with this movie, if you can call it that. Although the plot is credible--at least for a category III movie--the execution is limp, thanks to awful acting, extremely corny action, and extremely inane dialogue. No praise for the nudity either. The glaring problem the director had was finding females who could act and who were also willing to appear naked; apparently he didn't score too well. Of all the girls on the soccer team, only one appears unclothed and another appears topless. The rest of the girls on the team, including the well-endowed cuties on the cover art, show no skin at all.

Two additional females appear without clothes in this movie--nameless, nonacting fill-ins whose sole task is to do the obligatory cat III faked-sex scenes. In fact, the only nudity to be seen in the movie takes place during these "sex" scenes--the lamest, most unerotic simulated sex I've ever seen in a cat III movie. These long, dull sequences, redolent of cheap porn but without the explicitness, will quickly make you hit the fast-forward button and skip through the heavy-handed movements, poor camera angles, and tame side-view nudity.

Several scenes take place in a locker room, but not surprisingly the girls are either fully clothed or wrapped in large towels entirely covering their bodies. Talk about missed opportunities!

This was shot on video and is presented in full frame. Colors are pale and washed-out.

Bottom line: Look elsewhere, for this one neither entertains nor titillates. A complete waste. For engaging, romping fun in this genre, check out the far superior Girls Unbutton.

Warm Bodies (Amazon Instant Video) newly tagged "comedy"

Wow. And again, wow!! Who would've guessed that there would come a day when someone would create a zombie movie that could be accurately described as sweet and charming??

I loved this movie! And anyone will tell you that I'm not usually a zombie movie kind of gal. I suppose I don't have anything to say that my fellow 5-star reviewers haven't already mentioned, but I just wanted to get my two cents in. Warm Bodies is very compelling, funny, and well-acted. Nicholas Hoult is especially wonderful as "R", totally nailing the sympathetic character, the facial expressions, even the zombie walk!! He and Teresa Palmer have a very sweet chemistry, and their characters' unorthodox love story is certainly the heart of this great film. R and his zombie pals are not the mindless, heartless creatures that you'll find in other zombie flicks, but are very human, with thoughts, feelings, and a sense of humor. The violence isn't overly graphic and the romance is chaste and sweet, leaning more towards a Tim Burton-ish feel than Twilight, in my opinion. However, while this movie is just fine for teenagers, the adult language (several S-words and one F-word) restrains me from deeming it tween-friendly. But don't let that discourage you!! Ultimately, this is an endearing story about the power of love. If you're in the market for a movie with touching romance, clever humor, a great soundtrack and top-notch performances, please do yourself a favor and go see Warm Bodies! It will leave you feeling, well...warm!!

The Details (DVD) newly tagged "comedy"

THE DETAILS is a wickedly delicious dark comedy...a very dark comedy.

Tobey Maguire plays a young married doctor whose life seems to be continually spiraling downward, primarily because he keeps making poor choices. It's not that he's really a bad person; it's just that he seems to get himself trapped in desperate situations and, in order to save himself at the moment, he makes the wrong decision.

I'm not sure if Tobey's problems started with the raccoons that were destroying his lawn or his deciding to renovate his house without getting a building permit. Or, maybe it was the fact that he and his wife (Elizabeth Banks) had not had sex in many months.

Would you believe that any one of those seemingly relatively minor events could result in murder?

I don't want to be a spoiler, so I'm not going to detail the events that cause Tobey to sink further and further into his quagmire. Watching him do so is half the painful fun of this likable offbeat movie, written and directed by Jacob Aaron Estes.

THE DETAILS was filmed in Seattle and features a superb cast of supporting players that includes Dennis Haysbert, Ray Liotta and Kerry Washington. Laura Linney, who plays Tobey's whacky and meddlesome neighbor, delivers the film's scene-stealing performance.

The Blu-Ray disc from Anchor Bay Entertainment include a both an alternate beginning and ending, both of which were best left on the cutting room floor.

Tasalla Jet Screamer (Amazon Instant Video) hiljattain tagged "komedia"

Like the other reviewers here, the second season of "the Jetsons" was created in the 1980s, the syndicated show. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's not really a "Jetsons", because the first season offers. The original (and I think only) the Jetsons are available. It made its debut, in prime time on ABC, in 1962. It was one of the primetime animated series in the traditional. Warner's Bugs Bunny and his friends, the flintstones clan, Top Cat, and buds and Bullwinkle was the other (with the Flintstones is the most successful-until the network primetime animation pinnacle came about: "The Simpsons," now entering its 18th!?). "The Jetsons" then ran on Saturday mornings for four years, first on ABC, then to CBS, and then during the last two years, NBC. CBS picked it up, again, in 1969, for 2 years. Then, NBC ran across in the early 70 's and again a fairly constant from 1979 to 1983. Believe it or not, all of these works were these original episodes of the first season had been over and over and over again.

In 1985, the second season was produced, "third," a 1987-both of these were syndicated entries and was not very good (such as most of the companies to bring back shows in the 80 's). So, if you've received this the first season, you have a "Jetsons", basically. If not, you can easily find "the Jetsons: the Complete Series" by purchasing, realistically. Die-Hards and completists ' sake — might argue with me, but buyer beware, the shows are a lousy run and in the early sixties a great voice actors (which Hanna-Barbera, as expressed by others) are all gone. Not just the "Jetsons". To Forgive Me.

Vampires Anonymous (DVD) newly tagged "comedy"

After giving up his cravings and murdering his own girlfriend, Vic joins Vampires Anonymous to try and kick the habit. He relocates, goes through a 12-step program, and survives off sheep blood. Things get complicated when the locals complain about their dwindling sheep flocks. A would-be cop named Diesel starts investigating the strange occurrences, while a corporate vampire hunter closes in on Vic as well.

Generally, I do not like vampire films because they seem to copy one another and are rarely ever scary. And while this one wasn't scary by any means, it was at least interesting by putting a new spin on an old subgenre. This featured a clever script with many in-jokes. I particularly liked the parallels of Vic's hunger for blood and Diesel's need for alcohol. These urges hold back both characters in different ways. Whether either character can overcome their flaws affects the outcome of the film.

There is a lot of fun to be had here too. Michael Madsen plays Geno, Vic's program partner and confidante. Neil D'Monte plays Juan Rodrigo, a lovelorn vampire, doing a spot-on impression of Antonio Banderas. Small animals are "snack food" at the VA meetings, Vic reads "CosmoVamp" magazine, vampires get silicone poisoning after biting Swedish Bikini girls with breast implants, and while attempting to bleed a sheep, Vic is mistaken for a sheep f*cker by a redneck farmer.

The ending culminates into a cool showdown with Vic, his lady, and the vampire hunter running through a haunted house. It was pretty funny watching them push around the clueless people that mistook them for either employees using fake scare tactics or customers looking for some scares.

The sound and film quality were pretty good. They used several real animals like mice, birds, and sheep.

The SFX were good when used. However, this was a comedy, so there was minimal gore. The vampire teeth looked realistic as opposed to the plastic ones I have seen used in other films.

Favorite Quote: Vic to Maggie, "It's because I'm a vampire, isn't it? Are you afraid they won't let you in the sorority? Afraid they'll whisper, There goes the vampire-f*cker?" DVD Extras: Sadly, there were none! Only Scene Selections all by it's lonesome. I suggest a Special Edition re-release featuring commentary and Behind the Scenes footage.

Bottom Line: Refreshingly original take on the Vampire subgenre. Huge on laughs, but lacking in scares.

Rating: 7/10

Elementary: The First Season (DVD) newly tagged "comedy"

First of all, may I just say here and now that, apparently if you already watch and enjoy the BBC Sherlock series, you will be inclined to hate this one. I am not entirely sure why, but just to prove my point, look up all the 1 and 2 star reviews of Elementary here and count how many times the BBC show or it's actors are mentioned. Then go to the 5 star reviews and notice the depth of critique and the simultaneous lack of comparison to another show's take on Sherlock Holmes.

Okay. That aside:

This show is exceptional. Not only would it stand alone quite well without Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes ever having been written (which to some insults their ideas and affinities for SACD's work), but also adds societal context, modernity, and depth to Sherlock Holmes (something no one can say is easy, much less executable in such an artistic and subtle way as this series).

First, let us look at trying to place such a genius intellect and deductionist in today's cynical, apathetic, passive, low resolve and high civil retaliation context of modern London. This is where we must put a modern day Holmes, from his infancy up to his (SPOILER ALERT) inevitable heroine addiction. In the early London of Sir Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, there was this resolve, this popular tenacity in London, not to mention a clear cut notion of right and wrong, that permeated it's core culture and drive. A young man with Sherlock Holmes' gifts would have found quite a station and calling as he grew up in the higher learning institutions and accepting fields of forensics, police work, and medicine with their backdrop of solid morality and unwavering credos. He would have undoubtably arisen as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's main man as written. Logic trumps superstition and evil manipulation.

Now let us compare that same intellect, growing up in the morally empty, cynical, awkward avoiding culture of today's London. He, like many who dare to cling to what is right and shun what is wrong, end up shunned themselves; usually living alone with their non-utilized giftings, or moving somewhere where they may be exercised. Sherlock grows up cynical, brash, and arrogant (increasingly popular in London these days as potential and drive is squandered, replaced by entertainment and erased morals/sense of station). In this context, Sherlock Holmes arises as a frustrated genius young man who finds his only shelter lay in his crime foiling deductions and in the arms of a young woman whom he finds he can love-Irene.
SPOILER: Irene is murdred by "M". A serial killer eventually known as Moriarty.
Holmes then turns to Heroine and then loses His other shelter-Scotland Yard.
In the opening episode of ELEMENTARY, Sherlock has moved from London to New York, where he has just begun consulting for the NYPD. He had a destructive addiction to injecting heroine while working for Scotland Yard and was eventually forced to retire. His father now pays for him to live in an apartment called the Brownstone (in New York) where his sober companion, Joan Watson, lives with him in a non romantic professional relationship. Watson and Holmes sharpen each other. Watson keeps Holmes accountable. Holmes begins truing Watson in the art of Deduction.

Elementary's Sherlock Holmes feels out of place and alone in a world where he sees more than anyone else. Appropriate for a man like this in these modern times. A genius in the middle of a new breed of culture that shuns excellence for the comfort of mediocrity, and he knows it. This is revisited many times throughout the first 20 episodes.

This Sherlock Holmes lives a balance of escaping the tensions of this reality through debauchery (Prostitutes) and hyperkinetic medicating through constant activity (learning to pick locks and handcuffs, single stick fighting, watching 6 televisions at once, etc.) and his using his gifts of observation and deduction for good (good being very real and constant for him as so many shows today seem to despise).

This Sherlock is daily confronted with reality, both in the horrors he must do his best to prevent from happening again (Putting murderers out of the public domain), and in his addictive tendencies in dealing with pain. Sherlock does not run from his pain. He instead operates in the other two self destructive ways of handling pain. He shuts off emotionally and he medicates. The writers do an exceptional job in having Holmes respond to pain like a normal, albeit a genius of dynamic proportions, human being and Watson is the perfect counterpart to His medicating and shutting off emotionally. She keeps him focused on the only healing way to deal with pain. Feel it.

Aside from these things, Elementary also stands as one of the best "whodunnit" shows ever. The crimes are complex, the clues are given in a way as to have your own deductionist skills sharpened, and the plot twists are more often than not unexpected.

Overall:

1) Great writing.
2) Great characters that can be related to.
3) Great job articulating a modern Sherlock.

Safety Last! (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) newly tagged "comedy"

If one was to see the film today, one would be impressed and stunned as their was no CGI, there was no green/blue screen. This was Harold Lloyd showing us the most extreme when it comes to filmmaking by climbing a skyscraper to the onlookers below Los Angeles. Needless to say, audiences were shocked about how far Lloyd had went with this film and although there were mini-stages built, this was one risky film that was adored back then and now being discovered by many today.

"Safety Last!" is about The Boy (played by Harold Lloyd) who moves to the big city in 1922 in order to make more income. He leaves his beloved girlfriend (played by Mildred Davis) back at home and promises that he will marry her once he does well in the city.

Since moving to the city, he has sent his girlfriend letters everyday but the boy makes his life seem like life is going extremely well and that he is a manager at a major department store.

This is far from the truth as he lives with his pal (played by Bill Strother) who are late on their rent and have to hide from the landlord. The boy barely makes any money as he works at the De Vore department store in the fabric department and is an employee who often gets into trouble.

One day after finishing his shift, he runs into a police officer who happens to be an old friend of Harold. The two joke around and when the boy meets up with his roommate, he jokes that he has influence with the police and persuades his friend to knock the policeman over.

What the boy doesn't know is that when they are talking, his friend the police officer has left and another police officer has come in his place. Needless to say, the boy's friend pushes the cop and the boy learns that the police officer is not his friend.

The police officer then chases his friend around but the friend manages to escape by climbing a building.

Meanwhile, the boy decides what he should do with his pay. He can get something to eat or buy his girlfriend a broach without a chain. He forgoes the food and buys the broach but hopes to buy the chain when he makes more money. He sends the gift to his girlfriend.

Upon receiving it, his girlfriend is so happy about the gift and the boy's mother convinces his girlfriend to go to the city and see how he is doing.

So, one day during a wild day at work, the boy's girlfriend appears and immediately, the boy must pretend that he is the manager of the department store.

Through a good stretch of gags and hijinks featuring the boy trying to fake his girlfriend, he overhears his boss talking about how they can bring people to the store and whoever can come up with an idea will get $1,000. The boy thinks about his friend climbing the building and suggests the idea and his boss decides to give the boy's idea a chance.

During the big day at De Vore Department store which has been promoted on the front page of a major local newspaper, many have come to see a man climb the building.

The boy's friend is ready to scale the building but things don't go as planned since the policeman who was chasing the boy's friend is now trying to pursue him again. With everyone all around the department store building expecting a man to climb, with his friend trying to avoid the police, the boy has no choice but to scale the building on his own.

VIDEO:

"Safety Last is presented in 1080p High Definition (1:36:1 aspect ratio) and because Harold Lloyd believed in protecting his films, he was among the first to have his films preserved. Not only were these films under lock and key in safes, he did whatever he can to make sure they were protected from fires or any damage. It's important to note that nitrate film does catch fire and he did experience a fire despite trying to protect his films, but fortunately because of that, it led Harold Lloyd to preserve his films.

And so, a lot of his films look fantastic compared to other silent films of that year or era. At 90-years-old, picture quality for "Safety Last!", looks incredible on Blu-ray. White and grays are well-contrast, to see this film in HD versus the original 2005 DVD release, you notice how clear the film looks. There are no signs of major damage, dark flickering or white specks. Because the film is in HD, closeups and background look so much clearer and well-detailed. I was impressed!

According to the Criterion Collection, "The film is presented at a variable frame rate of approximately 22 frames per second to conform to film historian and restorer Kevin Brownlow's presentation and the Carl Davis score that accompanies it. The new digital transfer was created in 2K resolution on a DTF Scanity film scanner from a 35 mm nitrate print from Harold Lloyd's personal collection, made from the original negative. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, and warps were manually removed using MTI's DTRS and Pixel Farm's PFClean., while Image Systems' Phoenix was used for small dirt, jitter, flicker, and grain movement.

AUDIO/INTERTITLES:

"Safety Last!" comes with two musical soundtracks. The Musical score by composer Carl Davis from 1989, synchronized and restored under his supervision and presented in uncompressed stereo (LPCM 2.0). While also included is an alternate score by organist Gaylord Carter from the late 1960s, presented in uncompressed monaural (LPCM 1.0).

There are no subtitles because it is a silent film, but there are intertitles.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

"Safety Last! - The Criterion Collection #662" comes with the following special features:

Audio commentary - Featuring the original 2005 audio commentary which features film critic Leonard Maltin and director and Harold Lloyd archivist Richard Correll.
Introduction by Suzanne Lloyd - (17:21) Featuring an introduction by Harold Lloyd's granddaughter and president of Harold Lloyd Entertainment
Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius - (1:48:00) A classic 104-minute documentary from 1989 written by David Gill and Kevin Brownlow.
Three newly restored Lloyd shorts: Take a Chance (1918), Young Mr. Jazz (1919), and His Royal Slyness (1920), with commentary by Richard Correll and writer John Bengtson
Locations and Effects - (20:37) A new documentary featuring John Bengtson and special effects expert Craig Barron about the location of where "Safety Last!" was shot.
Carl Davis: Scoring for Harold - (24:08) A 2013 interview with Carl Davis who discusses working with Harold Lloyd.

EXTRAS:

"Safety Last! - The Criterion Collection #662? comes with a 24-page booklet featuring the essays "High-Flying Harold" by Ed Park.

JUDGMENT CALL:

Harold Lloyd is such a wonderful performer. "Safety Last!" is a film that anyone can watch and just be surprised about his risky performance and just seeing a man dangling from a clock tower or a piece of wood with the city of Los Angeles right behind him.

Granted, Lloyd and crew prepared the actor with a small stage built to give the illusion that the building was being climbed, but still...he was climbing many feet up and also climbing with a missing thumb and forefinger (a few years earlier, Lloyd lost his thumb and forefinger during a photoshoot when he had to hold a bomb which was suppose to be a prop ended up being a live bomb and putting the actor in the hospital).

"Safety Last!" is everything you come to expect from a comedy! A great story, great acting and a plenty of gags to keep the viewer entertained from beginning to end. This is a true classic in every way and I can only hope that many people would give this wonderful film a chance and watch it with a smile and also with awe with what Harold Lloyd has accomplished.

I know many people today may ask, who is Harold Lloyd? We heard of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton but who is Harry Lloyd? Part of the reason why people have not heard much of Lloyd is because he had major control over his films. Where as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton had an awesome career during the silent era, for those who study about the careers of the two men will learn that Hollywood was not to kind to them after the silent film era. Also, Harold Lloyd's asking price for a film for licensing was more than most companies wanted to pay for at the time.

So, there are over 300 films of Harold Lloyd that many of us have not seen and not sure if we will ever have the chance.

While Warner Bros. did release the "Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection" on DVD back in 2005, by the time a second set was rumored to be released, Warner Bros. began focusing on their direct-to-DVD library for their classics. While those of us who were aware of the picture quality of Lloyd's films would someday be picked up by another company like the Criterion Collection, but at the time, those were just dreams.

But the fact that the Criterion Collection has released "Safety Last!" on Blu-ray, as a fan of Harold Lloyd's work, I am absolutely thrilled that the Criterion Collection has decided to release the film on Blu-ray. Not only is the picture quality magnificent, you get two scores and many more special features that were not included on the original Warner Bros. DVD.

As Criterion has done for their Chaplin releases, they have done a spectacular job with "Safety Last!". The new "Introduction with Suzanne Lloyd" was wonderful to watch, as with the "Location and Effects" featuring Bengston and special effects expert Craig Barron was a wonderful addition but how awesome to have Carl Davis discussing his working relationship with Lloyd in 2013.

But the most notable special features that made me excited was to see "Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius", the American Masterworks documentary by David Gill and Kevin Brownlow. With Chaplin's "Unknown Chaplin" and Keaton's "Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow" available to the masses, "Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius" has not been released since 1991. It's only available on VHS and as a Harold Lloyd fan and collector of Lloyd memorabilia and videos, I have not been able to get my hands on a copy of this documentary and here it is, included with the Criterion Collection's "Safety Last!" release.

And while Chaplin and Keaton's shorts have been made available on DVD for quite some time, Harold Lloyd's shorts have not. And with the "Safety Last!" release, you get three newly restored Lloyd shorts with "Take a Chance", "Young Mr. Jazz" and "His Royal Shyness", plus each of these shorts has optional commentary by Rich Correll and writer John Bengston.

One can only hope that more titles will be released by the Criterion Collection as Lloyd has created a number of wonderful films in his oeuvre, but the fact that Criterion Collection really goes out and gives you so much more. As a Harold Lloyd fan, I'm really impressed by this release and very grateful for the Criterion Collection for making this release perfect!

Overall, "Safety Last!" is a magnificent film and is a Harold Lloyd masterpiece that will continue to entertain silent comedy fans for many generations to come. Not only are you getting one classic film but also three newly restored Harold Lloyd shorts plus the long, sought after Harold Lloyd documentary "Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius".

This release is deserving of five stars! Highly recommended!

Workaholics: Season Three [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) newly tagged "comedy"

I'm reviewing the show not the blu-ray since, at the time of this writing, there's no release date yet.
I've watched every episode of this series multiple times. I own the first two seasons on blu-ray and usually keep newer episodes saved on my DVR until space gets low. This show ranks right up there with the likes of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia", "Community", and "The Office". Not that this show is necessarily the SAME as those series. I mean as far as how much it makes me literally laugh out loud. Obnoxiously out loud...with no apology for doing so!

Some people may consider the humor as being low brow and juvenile. That may be true, but the writing is smart, quick witted and just plain hilarious. The cast is perfect from the main characters to the supporting ones. Montez may well be my favorite "secondary" character on television. It might be easy to suggest that one must be on something to get this. Not true. I like getting weird with these guys no matter what I have or haven't indulged in.

If you've never seen this show do yourself and your funny bone a favor. Buy the first two seasons and enjoy. "Highly" recommended. (:

Fundraiser (Amazon Instant Video) newly tagged "comedy"

I'll tell you what...HBO has done it again! With only an eight episode first season, Veep has got my vote! The show is funny, witty, well acted, and at the end of each short 30-minute episode I'm left wishing the show was an hour. The good news: Veep has been picked up for a second season according to a 4/30/2012 Hollywood Reporter article.

Like The Office, the show is shot in that improv, hand-held camera, 'you are there' style of filming, which for me can get a little annoying (especially since filming in that style has been an epidemic of late), but that is the show's only negative in my opinion.

The show follows VP Selina Meyer and her bumbling staff as they try to navigate through the brutal behind the scenes world of Washington DC politics. And for the most part poor Selina and her staff find themselves in wayyyy over their heads in almost every situation. The result is the hilariousness that ensues as we watch Selina get herself into one embarrassing and humiliating situation after another, then try to get out of those situations without self destructing.

And don't get me wrong about the "bumbling staff" comment...I mean no disrespect to the supporting cast. The chemistry between Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the cast of 6 primary supporting actors (Anna Chlumsky, Tony Hale, Reid Scott, Timothy Simons, Matt Walsh & Sufe Bradshaw) is the key ingredient to Veep's excellence.

4 ? stars for Veep. Vote this great, hysterical show into your cart!

Parental Guidance (DVD) newly tagged "comedy"

But they get a chance to bond with the tykes when Alice and Phil leave for a week for a scientific convention and, somewhat reluctantly, call on the "out-of-it" folks to baby-sit. As they say, hilarity (amazingly) ensues.

Artie and Diane, although sharp and game, have their work cut out for them. Besides the aformentioned baggage (and yuppified names!) each grandchild carries, and the mechanized Jetson-like home, Artie and Diane have to contend with the permissive parenting their charges are used to and their high-maintenance demands (e.g., each kid gets his own meal at suppertime, and Barker doesn't like his food touching other food). Furthermore, Artie is despondent over his firing from his minor league baseball announcer job, and he fears telling Alice. All sorts of slapstick hijicks, misadventures, and misunderstandings ensue. Examples, Artie has to bribe the bratty Barker to do anything, Artie's advice to Turner to stand up to the bullies making fun of his speech impediment gets the kid a shiner - from the bully's sister, the kids get an amped-up "sugar high" from some forbidden birthday cake, Artie protests at a little league baseball game that has no strikes, timeouts, or scoring and gets a bat in the crotch for his troubles, Barker gets indelible day-glo paint on Artie's face just before Harper's violin recital, and of course Artie sneaks off with Barker to an X-Games announcer's interview where Barker's escape and urination ruins an X-games skateboard stunt (and is broadcast nationally) as well as Artie's job prospects. Diane has a confrontation with Harper's demanding, martinet East European violin instructor, calling her "comrade". The comedy of errors keeps on coming.

In the hands of inexperienced actors, PG would be a groan-fest. But in Crystal's and Midler's capable, vaudevillian, borscht-belt hands, they are surprisingly funny. Crystal's cynical comments and one-liners wryly commenting on the insanity of their grandkids' lives, even more than the predictable slapstick, keep the laughs coming, because we agree with their disapproval of the grandkids' overwrought, permissive, but also perfectionist lifestyle. Even so, they love their grandkids and incrementally not only get to know them better, but also to overcome their handicaps and neuroses. At first shocked at Artie's and Diane's interference, Alice gradually gets reconciled to their ways of doing things, and to them as general. In unrealistic but satisfying sitcom fashion, everyone's issues get resolved and everybody's happy.

Yes, PG is unsophisticated and predictable and even a bit low-brow. But Crystal's and Midler's tried-and-true comic personae wring out the laughs and make you feel reasonably good.

Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfor (DVD) newly tagged "comedy"

There is Klaus, who loves to read, and is able to retain all the information he gets from books. Then there is baby Sunny, who has two teeth, and can bite anything. They always find her hanging from the table. She speaks in baby talk, and we get subtitles to translate what she says. Their parents die in a fire, and the banker Mr. Poe brings the children to live with their closet relative, and it's their parents third cousin four times removed or their fourth cousin three times removed. Whichever order, their relative is Count Olaf, a tall, actor with the tatoo of an eye on his ankle. He makes the children do chores, and cook roast beef dinners for his acting group, but his intentions are to kill the children and collect the fortune that their parents left behind. He tries to kill them, fails, and they get sent to live with their Uncle Monty, who is going to bring them on a trip to Peru, an animal lover with snakes, in cages, all over his house. Eventually they are sent to live with their safety freak Aunt Josephine, who doesn't like to open door with the knobs because she is scared that they will shatter and pieces will go into you eyes, and she doesn't like to cook things on the stove because she's scared that it'll blow up, so she feeds herself and the children cold cucumber soup. No matter where they go, they are always persued by Count Olaf, always in a different disguise, with his acting group not far behind, always with a clever trick up his sleeve to get that money.

Besides Jim Carrey, "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" has some all star cast members. People that you see all the time, but don't know their names. There is Catherine O'Hara as Olaf's neighbor. Cedric the Entertainer as a police officer. Olaf's theatre group includes Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Adams, Luis Guzmen, and Craig Ferguson. These names may not mean anything, but if you see the movie, you'll recongize them right away. The music is something else to see. Thomas Newmen is a brilliant composer. He did the music for one of my favorite movies, "American Beauty." His music gives such a gloomy feel, but you can't help but smile at it's genius. Stay for closing credits and listen, and you'll fall in love. I have been trying to rack my brain figuring out who would have made a better Count Olaf, but I can't think of any. Carrey also brings to much comedy to the roll, something that takes away much of the seriousness to the character. Olaf is not a nice person. He lies, cheats, steals, and kills to get his way, and you don't use those characteristics when you think about Jim Carrey.

Every single adult in this move, except for Count Olaf, is plain stupid. They just don't listen, which is a big problem in life. It's ironic that the children are always right, and the adults roll their eyes. What's so great about the film, is that Count Olaf uses the stupidity of these adults for his own benefit. Everything is connected to everything else. When Olaf is disguised, a person like you and me can see right through him, but not these characters. If they have any suspision that he is an imposter, they think that he is somebody completely different. It's darkly comic, and disturbing to think something like that could really happen. "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" is a very good movie, aside from Carrey's unwantedness. He simply was not right for the role. Maybe a John Malkovich type would have fit better. It's enough to bypass that performance, and just let the visuals wash all over you. I would see a sequal, because this movie doesn't tie up all the lose ends, and I'm glad that they are different from the book seris, otherwise, we would all know exactly how it ends, or if it doesn't end. Lemony Snicket was with the voice of Jude Law, as the 2004 Jude Law film festival concludes. This year alone, he's in "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," "I Heart Huckabees," "Alfie," "Closer," "Lemony Snicket," and "The Aviator," and he has become one of my favorite actors. His narration is perfect for this film, and his addition if truely wanted. Not one of the best films of the year, but certainly one of the most entertaining.

ENJOY!

rated PG for thematic elements, scary situations and brief language.

Zoolander (DVD) newly tagged "comedy"

Saying this movie is stupid is like saying the Sistine Chapel is pretty.

It doesn't convey the overwhelming epic nature of its' stupidity. This film goes for "stupid" in a colossal fashion. Swings for the fences.

But here's the thing: it's not dumb.

Oh no, not a bit.

It's actually an intentionally moronic tweak of "The Manchurian Candidate", with overt nods to "The Godfather Part II", music videos...

...Zoolander has been brainwashed to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia during a fashion show.

Derek refers to him as the "Prime Rib of Propecia". See? Stupid, but stupid funny.

There's a small role given to a guy who explains "the truth" to the whole plot to the two main characters. His casting is perfect.

The truth is definitely out there, and I giggled during the entire scene.

Ben Stiller plays Derek Zoolander, world's greatest male model. His real-life father plays his agent; Jon Voight plays his father in the film. His real-life wife plays his love interest. Owen Wilson plays the rival model Hansel.

No one with that sort of nose could ever (in a non-stupid world) be a superstar male model, which fits perfectly here. The camera almost lingers on that proboscis.

Will Ferrell again shows up with such a wigged-out performance that I would not be surprised if one day he is discovered to come from another planet. The guy's a loon.

In fact, I'm giving this an extra star (it's a good, solid 3+) simply due to the absolutely hilarious cameos sprinkled throughout the movie. Some may find this "stupid", but that's this film's raison d'etre. Come on...David Bowie judging a runway "walk-off"?

So realize that maybe only seven brain cells will fire while you're watching this.

Those seven will be pretty amused...

My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

There are about 173 out of screen effects that extend about 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer. 22 made it to 15%, 19 out to 20%, 36 more at 25% and 2, 30-35%. That's a lot of OOS effects. In addition there are quite a few quick 25-40% effects piled near the title scenes but the 3D in them is a somewhat flawed. However, very few 3D flaws elsewhere in this film. I would have to say my favorite effect is the baby juggling / drooling sequence around 30% approximately 10 minutes into the film.

This movie earned a 4 way tie for the # 2 position on my shelf. For 3D quality and humor, it ranks right up there with the 3 other animated greats, Open Season, Rio and Ice Age.

*** Another Must see ***
*** Add it to your list ***

MY 3D RATING = EXCELLENT (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

Note: As far as the percentages go, everyone's eyes are different. What I see at 25% you may see at 15% or 35%. To fully realize how far something is out of the screen for you, pause on an effect and direct a partner with an extended finger to the tip of what you are seeing. You may be surprised.
